“Once Upon a Time” had a pretty stellar season this year, first taking us all to Camelot and then to the Underworld.

All of our favorite characters performed admirably, and if given the chance, we’d award A+ grades to all of them, so we decided to focus on the outliers of the season in this report card. The side characters that worked and didn’t, and the plot twists that had us on our feet or flipping the channel all got graded. Check out what got good grades and what was a total failure below.

Merlin — A+

It’s possible that Merlin’s death hit us harder than all of Storybrooke’s other deaths over the years combined. He was such a charming and wonderful character, we were certain he’d stick around. We were lucky to have him for as long as we did, and if anyone else gets a free pass out of the Underworld next year, it should totally be him.

Hook as a Dark One — A

We’ll admit it … this twist blew us away, while simultaneously blowing our minds. The reveal that Hook had been a Dark One all along — and that Emma knew the whole time — was epic, and their final struggle was heartbreaking. Bravo for keeping us on our toes, “Once Upon a Time!”

Ruby Slipper — A-

The new romance of “Ruby Slipper,” otherwise known as Red Riding Hood and Dorothy, was a welcome addition to the show and brought some long-awaited LGBTQ representation into the mix. We wish it had gotten more time and development, but there’s always next season!

Henry & Violet — B+

It was about time Henry got some “true love” action of his own, and Violet was a prefect candidate. They had to take a pretty disappointing hiatus when Henry went to the Underworld without her for 10 episodes, but at least they finished the season strong!

Rumbelle baby — B-

This couple needed some new life injected into their story, but we’re not totally sure an actual new life was the way to go about it. Still, Rumple’s best story in all five seasons of the show was his arc as a father, so this new child might just give him the push he needs to find that elusive middle ground between Dark One and hero.

The Underworld — C

The Underworld was great in theory, and we were even willing to forgive some of the remarkably weak ties Disney has to Greek mythology to make this work. Unfortunately, the Underworld felt a little like juggling knives on fire, and not in a “Wow, cool!” kind of way. At least we got everyone back alive!

King Arthur — D

King Arthur was a disappointing villain, and his “romance” with Guinevere was pretty messed up. Fortunately, “Once Upon a Time” saved this story in the end by killing him and making his new quest to restore the Underworld to its glory from the after-life. Talk about a last minute redemption!
